The Scarf of Many Hues

🗓 2026年3月19日· 📚 daily · 👀 6

Elara held the silk scarf, its colors shimmering under the store lights.

She’d found it in the clearance section, a true bargain.

Her sister’s birthday was tomorrow, and this would be perfect.

She took it to the fitting room, eager to try on how it looked against her own skin, imagining her sister’s delight.

The mirror showed it draped beautifully, a vibrant splash against her simple dress.

She knew instantly it was the one.

At checkout, the cashier scanned the scarf.

“I’m sorry,” she said, “this item is out of stock.”

Elara’s heart sank.

“But it’s right here!” she protested, holding up the unique scarf.

The cashier checked her computer again.

“It seems this particular color combination was a limited edition and actually sold out online yesterday. This must be a display item.”

Elara felt a wave of disappointment.

She had hoped to avoid the hassle of online shopping, especially with tomorrow’s deadline.

She knew an exchange or return would take too long, and she needed it now.

The store didn’t even offer gift wrap for display items.

“Is there any chance you have another one, perhaps in the back?” Elara asked, her voice barely a whisper.

The cashier, seeing Elara’s crestfallen face, made a quick call to customer service.

After a moment, she smiled.

“Good news! Someone just returned one. It has no warranty, but it’s authentic.

We can offer you a refund if you don’t like it after all.

And since it’s technically an online return, we can give you free shipping for it if you want it delivered, and even a tracking number.”

Elara’s face brightened.

“I’ll take it!” she said, relieved.

The second-hand scarf, though briefly owned, felt brand new to her.

It was even better than a bargain; it was a small miracle.
