Leo, a new car rental agent, adjusted his tie.
It was his first day at the seaside office, and he felt a mix of nerves and excitement.
An older woman approached his counter, her face worried.
“My car had a breakdown this morning,” she explained.
“I need to get to the island for a wedding, but all the ferries are booked.”
Leo’s heart sank.
He checked the system; all available cars were out of stock for the day.
He suggested a ride-share, but she didn’t have the app.
"I even tried on a few hats for the wedding yesterday!" she added, looking defeated.
Suddenly, an idea sparked.
“There’s an old electric vehicle in the back lot,” Leo said.
“It was returned with a defective headlight, but it runs.
It’s a clearance item, so it would be a real bargain.”
He explained the car came with a full warranty, despite the minor issue.
“But I don’t have my driver’s license with me,” she said, her hope flickering.
Leo remembered the town’s special permit for local residents to drive golf carts to the ferry.
“Wait here!” he said, grabbing the keys.
He quickly checked the navigation system.
The main route to the ferry terminal had a detour due to road work.
He’d have to guide her.
He buckled his seat belt.
As they drove, he pointed out a pedestrian crossing the intersection.
They arrived just as the last ferry of the day was about to depart.
“It’s authentic – it will get you there,” he assured her.
“And no flat tire!”
She beamed, thanking him profusely before boarding.
