Voices Beneath the Surface

“Why won’t you say a word?” Ana asked gently, watching the old man sit alone on the cold bench in the underground metro station known only to locals.

The air smelled faintly of salt and diesel, a strange mix that reminded the fisherman of the sea he loved.

He didn’t answer.

His eyes seemed to push back the world, full of memories he could not share.

Ana wanted to flesh out the silence between them, but she only had a heads-up that today might be hard.

Later, when the station emptied, Ana dropped by his small shelter.

“You need to fit in here sometimes, even if it’s just to hang out,” she said softly.

The fisherman looked at her, then away, as if holding back a story.

Finally, he spoke—just one sentence: “I made a mistake I can’t undo.”

She understood immediately.

The mistake had taken a toll on him, a choice made long ago that kept him on the fence ever since.

"Point taken," Ana replied, “but maybe settling down here could help.”

He smiled faintly, the first sign of life in days.

“No use moving the goalposts now,” he said.

“I won’t call in sick to life anymore, nor throw in the towel.

I’ll spill the tea one day, but not yet.”

With that, he stood, ready to face another day underground, where the echoes of his past and the quiet hope of tomorrow fit together like waves beneath the surface.
