Looking at My City’s Architecture After the Storm

🗓 2026年4月19日· 📚 daily · 👀 6

Last week, after a big hurricane hit our city, I walked through my neighborhood and saw things differently.

The river was higher than usual, and many bridges were closed for safety.

Some buildings looked strong and safe, while others had broken windows and water inside.

I started to think about architecture, and how each building is designed not only to look nice, but to protect people from weather disasters like tsunamis or storms.

Good architecture, I realized, is never just about style.

It is practical, too.

The buildings that had strong roofs and high foundations seemed to handle the hurricane better than the old houses near the river.

As I walked, I noticed how our city’s infrastructure helped us as well.

The new drains worked well, so the streets were not flooded for too long.

This made the roads usable, so people could get to the pharmacy for over-the-counter medicine if they needed it.

I used to think city planning was full of jargon, but now I understand why experts talk about a holistic plan.

It is not just talk.

When a tsunami or hurricane comes, we all depend on smart planning.

Now, when I look at my city, I appreciate these practical things much more.
