Neighbors Help After a Fire in Oak Street

A fire damaged three homes on Oak Street early Tuesday, and a man and a woman helped six people get out. No one was hurt, the fire service said. The families are staying with friends while workers check the homes. “We are safe here,” resident Maria Lee said. “This is our home, and we hope to return soon.”

The fire began in an old house at about 6 a.m. A neighbor saw smoke and called for help. Fire crews arrived minutes later and stopped the fire from reaching nearby homes. Officials have not said what caused it. The city will give the families food and a place to stay. Oak Street has many small homes, and some are more than 50 years old.
