Speech by Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong at the National Family Festival 2026 and launch of the Screen Smart From Start national movement on 31 May 2026.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong addressed Singaporeans at the National Family Festival 2026, held to celebrate and strengthen family bonds in the community. During his speech, he emphasized the importance of families as the foundation of Singapore society and announced the launch of the 'Screen Smart From Start' national movement.
The Prime Minister highlighted that as Singapore progresses, families must adapt to new challenges, including the impact of digital technology on everyday life. He noted that screens are now a constant presence, offering both benefits and risks. While technology can connect families, it can also distract from meaningful interactions. Therefore, the 'Screen Smart From Start' initiative encourages families to develop healthy habits around technology use from an early age.
Mr. Wong shared stories of families who have successfully set boundaries for device usage at home, such as designating tech-free zones or times for shared meals and conversations. He encouraged all families to openly discuss their digital habits and make collective decisions to support each other in maintaining a balanced lifestyle.
He also underscored the government's ongoing support for families, through policies that promote work-life balance, childcare support, and eldercare services. The aim is to create an environment where families can thrive and children can grow up supported and safe, both offline and online.
In closing, Prime Minister Wong called on everyone – parents, children, grandparents, educators, and the wider community – to join hands in fostering a culture where families communicate, spend quality time together, and enjoy the advantages of technology responsibly.
The National Family Festival 2026 featured various activities, workshops, and discussions focused on family well-being, digital literacy, and cultivating resilience in the face of modern pressures.
The government will continue to work with community partners to offer resources and support, ensuring that families are equipped to navigate the evolving digital landscape while preserving the values that have long held Singapore together.
